      Middle School Variety Show Rocks

Both Zoom and bubbled audiences were treated to a showcase of music, dance, comedy and theatre in the Middle School Variety Show. With acts from Remove to Upper Four, the quality of performances were consistently showbiz, displaying the talent and enthusiasm which runs through Moreton.

The pupils began their practice for the showcase online, during lockdown. They took this hurdle in their stride – rehearsing over Zoom, a platform we have come to know so well, then moving straight to in-person rehearsals the minute they got back to school. Mrs Howells, Head of Drama, stated: “Once again the Moreton pupils have risen to the challenge of producing an outstanding production.” She continued, “Despite the restraints of the pandemic, their professionalism, passion, positivity and commitment to this show powered through, and has once again reminded me why I am lucky to teach at Moreton.”

After so many months, clever choreography and staggering stage directions allowed for socially distanced performances; feeding the passion back into drama at Moreton and breathing life back into the Holroyd Community Theatre.

Director and producer Michael Jenkins enthused:

A scene from Matilda opened the show. Trunchbull Tori’s tyrannical regime was emphatically rejected by the ‘Revolting Children’ – a role played worryingly well! And whilst the children performed, the comedic dullard Mrs Wormwood is advised by an incredulous doctor that international salsa is not for her.

Presenters Lauren, Violet and Lizzie were at helm, navigating through the acts with their witty repertoire. Bringing back the Hollywood glory days, twins Eliza and Romilly really did ‘act as one’ as they performed ‘sisters’.

Sophie and Beatrice transported us from the 1950s to the 1980s rocking ‘Living on a Prayer’ with aplomb!

Many outstanding acts followed: from monologues and ballet to singing and tap dancing with highlights such as ‘I Know It’s today’ from Shrek: The Musical sung by Hedy, Kate and Eliza and the old musical classic ‘Defying Gravity’ sung expertly by Jenna; she was out of this world! What can we say? The girl raised the roof; she certainly sent us into orbit.

The show was brought to a close by another whole group performance: ‘Stick it to the Man’ from School of Rock (otherwise known as Moreton Hall). The smile on every pupil’s face as the lights dimmed and the applause began proved how proud they were of themselves and each other; echoing their determination to succeed in putting on the show – just as there’s no way to stop the school of Rock, there’s no way to stop the Moreton magic.

The hard work and quality of performance is testament to Mr Jenkins’s creativity and passion. He never fails to cultivate and showcase the girls’ talent. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the performance and appreciated the tenacity and enthusiasm of those who were involved – whether it be backstage (big thanks to Rebecca, Eve, and Leonora), or in the spotlight.

      – Tarryn, Martha and Georgia (U5)
